Chapter 11: In the midst of a turbulent economic climate
Neorest EX pioneers the next generation of toilets
詳細説明
In 1993, the company launched the “Neorest EX,” which combines the words “neo” (new) and “rest” (restroom) to signify a next-generation toilet. The development of the Neorest EX began in 1988 with a project named “THE BENKI Project. The theme given to the development team was “Make a toilet that is not a toilet bowl. In other words, as a pioneer in the industry, the team wanted to provide next-generation toilet bowls that would revolutionize the image of conventional toilet bowls.
Responding to two needs that had already been increasingly requested by society: water saving and the creation of a new toilet space, Neorest EX achieved a significant water saving (8L for large and 6L for small), which is 40% less than conventional models, and a low silhouette design with no tank. These were made possible by TOTO’s accumulated electronics technologies and a new toilet bowl flushing system developed based on fluid analysis using computer simulations. The sequential valve system divides the toilet bowl washing process into a series of steps: “flush water from the rim (edge of the bowl) to wash the bowl,” “jet vigorous water from the zed hole to cause a siphon phenomenon in the drainage channel,” and “flush water from the rim again to collect water. This was a completely new technology that automatically controlled the valve using a microcomputer. This drastic water-saving and low-silhouette design made the toilet fixture configuration and the area around the fixture cleaner and more flexible, allowing for a wider range of design possibilities in toilet space configuration and other aspects. The Neorest EX won the Good Design Award in 1993, and was highly acclaimed not only for its performance but also for its design, which had a major impact on the development of subsequent toilets.
