Products that connect tradition and modernity, rural and urban areas
詳細説明
“Y.M.D.” is a design project that Igarashi undertook with Yamada Shomei Co., Ltd. to support local industries and traditional crafts in Japan. This stool was produced as part of the “imono” series in collaboration with Yamasho Foundry Co., Ltd., a manufacturer of Yamagata cast iron. The wavy iron seat, which contrasts strikingly with the rugged aluminum three legs, is cast as thin as possible to neutralize the weight of the iron. The expression of lightness that Igarashi attempted in the production of cast iron, which is formed by pouring heated iron into a sand mold, would not have been possible without the presence of craftsmen who carry on traditional techniques. This project, which lasted from 1989 to 1994, was significant in that it covered everything from design to manufacturing, distribution, and public relations, and connected local producers with urban consumers. Other items produced included a flower vase made by Takaoka Copperware in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, and tableware made from ceramics in Seto City, Aichi Prefecture.
