The SAPIENCE series is based on the concept of “intellectual playground equipment for humanity.”
Conventional playground structures are typically organized around columns and decks combined with slides, ladders, and walkways. Although decorative motifs may vary, the fundamental play functions remain largely the same, limiting the diversity of play experiences. In addition, reliance on external designers often made it difficult to design expandable structural systems.
To overcome these limitations, the development team designed the structural system entirely in-house. By eliminating platforms and allowing columns and beams themselves to function as play elements, they aimed to broaden play possibilities and encourage creativity. This approach led to the adoption of a spiral structure, whose gradually changing height creates different entry routes depending on a child’s age and physical ability.
During the design process, the team linked unstable footing with experiences of playing in nature and incorporated the golden ratio, a proportion commonly found in natural forms such as shells and plant growth. The combination of spiral geometry and natural proportions gave rise to the concept of “intellectual playground equipment for humanity.”
The circular layout promotes continuous movement, encouraging children to keep playing without stopping in one place.
Considering the limited size of many kindergarten and nursery school playgrounds in Japan, SAPIENCE003 was designed in a more compact form than SAPIENCE001, making it easier to install in smaller outdoor spaces.
