Operated by side dials, the headrest, lumbar section, and leg rest are independently adjustable. The chair can function upright or recline fully with an extended footrest. Its multi-jointed frame, developed over four years, allows a wide range of comfortable positions and was presented at the 1980 Milan Salone, where it received high acclaim.

While multifunctional seating has existed in various forms, advances in materials and engineering in the late 20th century enabled entirely new possibilities. Often said to have been inspired by automobile seats, the Wink Chair became a pioneering example of the multifunctional seating that emerged in the 1980s.
